Best Non-Blog / Magazine Style Wordpress Themes
Sometimes you just don’t want your blog to look like, well, a blog. Frankly, the same old basic blog formats can get boring. At the same time, blog platforms (most notably Wordpress) are amazing in that they can be used to manage a variety of types of sites beyond typical blogs. One example would be using Wordpress to run an online magazine (for an awesome example, check out XXLmag.com). But not everyone has the ability to create an online magazine theme from scratch. Luckily there are a few (and hopefully many more to come) magazine style (or non-blog style) Wordpress themes available. Here are some of the best non-blog Wordpress themes currently available:
Gridlock

I’m personally using an edited version of this theme (with a centered design and more home page content areas added) on my Fad Marketing blog (Fad Marketing is no longer using this theme, and has been merged with my business blog).

Leia

Leia is just a flat out gorgeous Wordpress theme, and would work well for an online magazine or more traditional blog.
Js Theme

I love the color scheme on this non-blog theme for Wordpress. I’m actually using an altered version of it for the pending relaunch of my indie music webzine.
Small Studio

The small studio theme isn’t necessarily a magazine style Wordpress theme, but it’s definitely a non-blog theme. If you’re considering using Wordpress as the backend for a business or portfolio site, the Small Studio theme would make for an excellent starting point.

did you stop using Gridlock for your fad marketing blog? if so, any particular reason why?
just doing some due diligence before i pick a theme.
thanks

I didn’t change the theme, but I merged my Fad Marketing blog with my business blog at BizAmmo.com (should be redirected now), which is using a heavily-edited version of the Quadruple Blue theme.
Most of the people using Gridlock hadn’t been able to get it centered, but I got some help in doing that. So if you use it and want it centered, I do still have my theme files stored on my server, which I’ll gladly send you to use and edit instead of the original download.

Hey there,
Thanks for the quick response.
I am not sure still which one to try out. A few have commented that Gridlock is wonky in IE and works best on FIrefox only. Plantation looks nice, but I don’t think it has been ported to Wordpress yet, or I just can’t find it.
newspaper Wp looks very tidy

Argh. How to choose?

I removed plantation. You’re right… it wasn’t ported. I found it in another list of themes while looking for one for a site of mine a while back, and never actually tested it.
I never had an issue with Gridlock, but I did get some help in fixing up the template for better display. You’re welcome to those files if you decide to try them and see if they work ok for you on IE.
I’d check on the first one. I believe it’s an older theme, so make sure it works with the latest version of WP (not saying it doesn’t… I don’t know myself).
Those next two are nice. Thanks for pointing them out. I may be able to use them for something.

I’m glad to hear the morning after theme is FINALLY nearing completion. I’d given up on waiting for it, but it actually looks like it would be perfect for my music webzine redesign I’m about to do, so I hope it’s finished up soon.

I am liking the morning after very much too. Can’t wait. Though, actually, it’s more like must wait

Hey Jennifer, I saw that you said you were using a centered version of Gridlock. If you still have it available to download I would love to take a peak as I’ve been trying to figure out how to center it for the past two weeks! Thanks in advance =]
