Why You Should Care About Self-Publishing
On my most recent segment of Chick Tech Talk, on Writing and Marketing E-books, Dee Power and I were discussing a form of self-publishing. While our main focus was e-books, Dee also touched on quite a few excellent points and suggestions regarding print self-publishing. Looking back, I was thinking that self-publishing as a whole is something often neglected by online entrepreneurs. Here’s why you shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss it:
Many of you probably self-publish something already, whether you think about it or not. It might be articles, a blog, an e-book, etc. So why not consider releasing print books and reports? Self publishing has a few perks:
1. You can earn money by selling your informational products.
2. You don’t have to deal with the politics of working with traditional publishers.
3. Publishing in any form will help to build and maintain your image as an expert in your niche.
Like it or not, some people do still prefer to have a hard-copy book over an e-book. Dee herself mentioned not liking to read e-books on-screen, so she prints them out. For many, it would be easier to simply buy the book instead of assembling it in print themselves. And self-publishing print books doesn’t have to be expensive. As a matter of fact, it can be free! There are plenty of print-on-demand (POD) publishers (like Lulu.com) who will print your books as orders come in. You don’t have to pre-purchase anything, or handle inventory, billing, and shipping. It’s all done for you for a portion of each sale with no up-front cost in some cases (and only a small cost if you want an ISBN and such to be able to sell it in bookstores or places like Amazon.com).
So no matter what niche you work in, don’t overlook the benefits that self-publishing has to offer.
